Steve Lutz started his career with the Reno County Sheriff’s Office in January 1987. Steve has held various positions within the department such as jail deputy, patrol deputy, patrol sergeant, and detective sergeant. In July of 2007 he was promoted to his current position of captain. His daily duties entail commanding the Detective Division, which includes General Investigations, fugitive warrants, Computer Crimes, Drug Enforcement Unit, and Offender Registry. Steve also supervises the Hostage Negotiation unit of the Hutchinson / Reno County Emergency Response Team.

Steve is a native of Hutchinson and attended schools here to include Hutchinson Community College. Prior to being employed by the Reno County Sheriff’s Office, Steve graduated from the U.S. Army Military Police School and served with both the U.S. Army Reserve and the Kansas Army National Guard.

Among some of his training while being a member of the Reno County Sheriff’s Office is Sexual Assault Investigation, Homicide Investigation, Post Blast Investigation (Bomb Investigation), Forensic Medical Investigation, and Crime Scene Management. He is a past president of the Kansas Crime Stoppers Association and a graduate of the FBI’s Law Enforcement Executive Development Association.
