Correctional Officer Applicant Information

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the jail officer are to provide for the custody and care of all persons placed in the custody of the sheriff.

Qualifications

Applicants must be 18 years of age or older at hire with a high school diploma or GED, must have a valid Kansas Drivers License, and must be a United States citizen. Applicants must also be free of any felony or domestic violence convictions and must successfully complete an intensive jail officer training program. Jail officers may receive consideration for available sheriff patrol officer positions, but must obtain age 21 for entry into KLETC.

Additional Requirements

In addition to the entrance exam, eligible applicants will be required to successfully pass an oral interview, background check, psychological exam, drug screen, and physical capacity profile. Successful candidates will be placed on an eligibility list for one year.

Status & Salary

  • Full time: 40 hours / 12 hour rotating shifts
  • $17.19 per hour while on training; $18.05 per hour upon completion of training. Starting wage may increase with prior law enforcement/corrections experience.
