When a citizen calls the Reno County Sheriff Office or 911 for assistance, the initial responding Deputy is assigned to the Uniformed Patrol Division. Deputies of the Reno County Sheriff Office who are assigned to the Patrol Division handle all of the initial investigative duties that pertain to calls for service in the County of Reno, as with every agency, the uniformed patrol is the most visible and it is the ‘backbone’ of the department. These Deputies meet with the reporting person, interview witnesses and suspects, collect evidence, render first aid, effect arrests and conduct auto collision investigations. If a scene or criminal investigation is complex, the Patrol Deputy can request assistance from the Detective Division for additional investigative resources; however the initial case is worked by the Patrol Deputy.
Many Patrol Officers have received specialized training in investigative techniques, narcotics detection and investigation, evidence recovery and crisis intervention training (CIT) which enhances their response to our County. Patrol Deputies receive advanced training in Community Oriented Policing, Use of Force, Police Vehicle Operations and a myriad of other law enforcement topics. All Patrol Deputies are required to attend the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) to obtain state certification and then maintain 40 hours of continual education each year.
The Uniform Patrol Division Commander is responsible for the overall operation of the Uniform Patrol Division under the direction of the Sheriff. The Uniform Patrol Division Commander has divisional authority in matters of operation, policy and discipline and will exercise such lawful directives as are necessary to assure the effective performance of the division. The Uniform Patrol Division Commander shall hold the rank of Captain.
Reno County is divided up into three beats or zones. These beats are patrolled by Deputies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year. Each detail is comprised of a Shift Commander which is a Supervising Sergeant and a minimum of 3 Patrol Deputies. Shift Commanders are responsible for assuring that adequate supervision and uniform personnel are on duty at all times during their respective shifts.
The Reno County Sheriff Office mission of serving the public is greatly enhanced through its dedication to keeping its Deputies fully trained and equipped in order to meet the changing needs within the Public Safety Community. The Training required by the Reno County Sheriff Office allows for the department to take pride in the fact that we go well beyond the mandatory training that the state and federal government requires.
The law enforcement community within the United States offers formal and informational schooling in every aspect of Law Enforcement. Deputies of the Reno County Sheriff Office take advantage of these schools each year, which keeps us at the leading edge of law enforcement capability.
The Civil Process Division operates under the supervision of the Patrol Captain. This division incorporates a variety of specialized units including Civil Process, Delinquent Taxes, and Courthouse Security. All of these units are under the direct supervision of a Patrol Sergeant, and consist of three Patrol Deputies, two Special Deputies, and an administrative assistant. The Civil Process office handles a wide variety of Court documents including Evictions, Summons, Protection Orders, and Repossessions.
The Tax Deputy works in conjunction with the County Treasurer and the County Counselor to serve and collect delinquent taxes on personal property and real estate. The Tax Deputy closes each tax year by holding a public tax sale for all remaining real estate that delinquent taxes have not been collected on.
The Courthouse Security Deputy oversees the operation of video and security checkpoint equipment. The Deputy performs security sweeps of the facility, monitors courtroom activity, effects arrests on warrants, contempt orders, sentencing, and ongoing criminal activity.
